About Callum Anthony Hodgson
The basis of my work as a photographic practitioner is the strong sense of belonging and activism. Exploring interactions with space has led me to use multi-media approaches to inform contemporary debate of concepts of personal and international importance.
My work is always strongly founded by people and place and the psychological notion of belonging. Curating exhibitions such as ‘This is Your Life’ (2019) at Bethany City Church in partnership with Alzheimer’s Society which showcased the power of personal photographs in aiding Alzheimer’s Disease. Later producing ‘Surveillance Society’ (2019), a video piece documenting our blinding relationship with surveillance culture, presented in the Northern Centre of Photography.
Recently I have explored modern activism in projects such as ‘Captive’ (2020) which responded to the urgency of our emerging plastic oceans; and ‘Whitewash’ (2018) which documented the 2015 Syrian refugee crisis and the response from UK nationals. Other recent projects include an upcoming exhibition at the Priestman Gallery in Sunderland, UK, ‘Beyond Four Walls’ (2020) which challenges the notion of ‘home’ and psychological escapism; ‘Motherhood: Here Comes Trouble’ (2018) which displays my personal relationship and journey with ‘motherhood’ by proxy.
Heavily interested in photographic history, I have also published research papers online, the most recent is ‘Appraisal, Asset, Archive: The Photographic Archive in the 21st Century’ which explores the photographic archive and its role in the modern world.
